Woke up this morning to blue skies and snow on the ground. The view from the lodge itself is nothing short of stunning with the fells surrounding Lake Windermere towards Ambleside covered in snow. And the wind seems to have dropped, but it is still cold. However, as a good friend of mine keeps saying - "There is no such thing as bad weather in the Lakes, just the wrong clothes"
It is days like this that does remind us of why we bought up here in the first place, well to a degree at least. We are having to keep the central heating going all day to keep the place warm and on bottled gas that is very expensive. Also, it is too cold to go out on the decking for a bbq, unless of course I set up the very environmentally unfriendly patio heater. Even then, I think it would be too cold.
The site here at Falbarrow is looking better than the first weekend, but that was not hard to achieve considering the bomb site that greeted us at the beginning of March. The new lodges at the entrance to the site are disappointing to say the least. I expected the full width timber lodges to sited on this prominent site. However, SLP are installing the slightly wider caravan style lodges. Looking at the size of pitches they have created, there is not much room for anyhting else. I don't see how they can install decking of any size for these "lodges". The site itself seemed to have escaped the worst of the wind, with just two boats ending up beached having broken free from moorings out on the lake. The jetties on FB did not however protect the one boat moored there as it half broke away and was swinging around quite alarmingly.
So far this season I have visited the shop twice, once for a paper and second time for some cooking oil, which they did not stock. So now I walk into Bowness to the Tesco for things like papers and other stuff. It is only a few minutes extra to walk there and back and I need all the exercise I can get. As I have said several times, SLP could shut the shop and reduce our fees as it consistently makes a loss (just my opinion).
